So last week I had a commerce assignment to create a mothers day product to sell at school. We were put into groups and given a budget of $10 to buy the ingredients for products. Lets just say my group was not so helpful in the process of our assignment and I did everything myself including selling our product on the day itself because they were all away. 🙂
I came up with the fun idea to make lip balm to sell at our school for mothers day. I went home, made a test lip balm and took a photo of it to use as the poster. The picture above is the poster I made which I then printed off and put up all over the school as advertising.
The next job was to make the product to sell at school. I went down the street and bought three packets of lip balm containers from our local dollar store and some big containers of petroleum jelly (Vaseline). Then I made the lip balms at home.
I experimented with a few different things to try to make coloured and flavored lip balms including jelly crystals and food colouring. You should see what food colouring looks like in Vaseline, it didn’t turn out to mix in quite the way I expected!
I prepared all of my lip balm a few days before they day we were supposed to sell our products but most of the other groups still had not organized anything at all. I sold my lip balms at school for $1 or two of them for $1.50.
On the day I was selling them I got one of the standard fill in the blank notes from the office telling me to go there at recess. I am a pretty good student (if i do say so myself!) so I was not concerned about being in trouble like most students who receive these notes. It certainly was out of the norm so I was pretty curious about what I would have been called to the office about. When I got there it turned out all the office ladies just wanted to buy lip balm from me, which was pretty funny!
I made about $22.50 which was great considering I only spent $10 dollars on the project so I got $12.50 profit! Success!
DIY Lip Balm
Ingredients
Petroleum Jelly (aka Vaseline)
Old lip gloss or lipstick
Lip Balm Containers (aka accessory containers)
Method
Melt your petroleum jelly in a ceramic bowl in the microwave.
Mix in a fair bit of lipstick or lip gloss in different amounts depending on how strong you want the colour. I had some old lip smackers at home so I mixed them in to make flavored and colored lip balm that smelt really yummy.
Pour the mixture in the containers and wait for them to set.
I hope you guys have a fantastic day thanking your mums for all the wonderful things they do for you on mothers day, or even thank them every day – they deserve it!!
xx Brittany
